WoW Forever vs WoW Classic

Last updated:

If you have played WoW Classic, Forever will feel familiar: same continents, same level cap of 60, same emphasis on the journey. But Blizzard is clear that it is not a re-release. In its own words, Forever “is not a mode, a season, or a new version of Classic.” This page lays out what is the same, what is new, and what is still unknown. For a quick summary see the WoW Forever home page.

What stays the same

Blizzard says four pillars guide the game: approachable and familiar, the world as the main character, the journey before the destination, and protecting the social experience. In practice that means leveling remains as important as endgame, effort still matters, and rewards come from playing — leveling, dungeons, exploration and making friends. There are no flying mounts and no level scaling, and Blizzard says it is “being thoughtful about convenience” because quality-of-life features can change how players meet each other.

What is new

World and quests

New regions fill in gaps on the original map. Mount Hyjal explores the aftermath of Archimonde’s defeat. Shen’dralas, between Mulgore and Desolace, ties into the Shen’dralar and Dire Maul. The Riverglades adds over 150 quests for the mid-30s to mid-40s. Zephras Isle is a new 1–12 starting zone.

Dungeons and raids

Nine new dungeons include the Hall of Thanes under Ironforge, the Ruins of Lordaeron and the City of Dalaran. Hyjal Summit (20 players) and the Barrow Deeps (10 players, max level) are the first new raids, with Blizzard saying new raids unlock on December 9.

Classes

Blizzard says classes get new abilities and talent updates designed to fix gaps “without erasing what makes each class unique.” TODO: verify — specific class changes per class (no official list found yet). See our classes overview.

Systems and options

Legacy progression rewards leveling alts. Camping lets players craft campfires that others can use and improve with professions. Transmog is opt-in, and players can pick HD or SD models and Classic or modern visual presets.

Leveling: what carries over from Classic

If you know how leveling works in WoW Classic, most of that knowledge should transfer, because Blizzard says leveling “remains just as important as endgame” and there is no level scaling. In Classic, the general rules are:

  • Zones have fixed level ranges, so you move from zone to zone as you level.
  • Quests give most of the experience; dungeons are slower but give gear.
  • Mounts start at level 40 and require training the riding skill. Blizzard notes that the Cerulean Prideclaw from the Heroic Pack also requires the riding skill, purchased in-game. TODO: verify — riding level and cost in Forever.
  • Class trainers teach new spell ranks every couple of levels.

What changes in Forever is the route. More than a thousand new quests and new zones (Riverglades for the mid-30s to mid-40s, Zephras Isle for 1–12) mean that classic leveling guides will be only partly accurate. Blizzard also adds Legacy progression for players who level alts. TODO: verify — what Legacy progression rewards and whether it speeds up alt leveling.

Endgame: Classic raids versus Forever raids

In Classic, the level 60 endgame starts with Molten Core and moves through later raids in phases. Forever’s story is set before Molten Core, and its first new raids are Hyjal Summit (20 players) and the Barrow Deeps (10 players). Blizzard says new raids unlock on December 9 and a “revamped iconic raid” is on the roadmap. TODO: verify — whether Molten Core and other original raids are available in Forever, and in what form.

Smaller raid sizes (10 and 20) also change group dynamics compared with Classic’s 40-player raids: fewer players to organize, and each role matters more.

Social systems and quality of life

Blizzard frames many decisions around protecting the social side of the game. Camping is the clearest example: players craft campfires in the open world that others can visit, add to with professions and gain shared buffs from. Transmog is opt-in, and visual presets let you choose between a Classic and a modern look. These are additions Classic does not have. Blizzard also says it is “being thoughtful about convenience,” so do not expect modern features such as group finders by default. TODO: verify — whether any dungeon finder or cross-realm grouping exists in Forever.

Which one should you play?

Choose Classic if you want the original game exactly as it was. Choose Forever if you love that feel but want new places to explore and a game that keeps getting new content. Both use the same subscription, as covered on the price page.

Still unknown

Realm types, character transfers, the economy and auction house rules, and whether Forever and Classic share any progression have not been confirmed. TODO: verify — character transfers Classic → Forever, realm types, auction house details. We will update this page and the news log as Blizzard shares more.
